Consequences

Those who aren’t openhanded are called wicked. They live with a posture of scarcity. Scarcity breeds envy, jealousy, and anxiety. Other people become competition or threats in the chase after power, position, or wealth.3 The wicked look to these things to provide a false sense of stability and security. And this posture of idolatry is what separates the wicked from God. David explains that those who are cursed are cut off (Ps 37:22). Worse than suffering material need, those who are cut off from God truly have nothing. “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36 ESV). Being cut off from the God of the universe is being restricted from all his provision and blessing and, most importantly, his very presence and a life with him.

David writes a similar statement earlier in this psalm, “For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land” (v. 9 ESV), reinforcing the same idea of the cursed not receiving an inheritance of the land. The Israelites understood the blessing of the land as having a place to dwell securely where they would enjoy Yahweh’s blessing. The true safety and security of our lives come only in the Lord’s presence, and David pens these contrasts so we see, clearly, the consequences of our decisions.
